'ARSENAL are closing in on a £24.7million deal for Porto striker Jackson Martinez,' says the Daily Express in what they claim is an 'EXCLUSIVE'. The headline? 'Porto helpless to stop Arsenal triggering £24.7m Jackson Martinez clause'. Aye, that's how a release clause works.
They quote Porto president Nuno Pinto da Costa saying: "He's a player we want to keep, but we cannot stop someone paying the clause. Jackson went on vacation and so when he returns we will try to renew his deal just like last year."
We make that four straight summers that Arsenal have been close to signing Jackson Martinez.
LIVERPOOL FAIL IN CLYNE BID
'Liverpool have failed in a £10 million bid for Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne,' says the Daily Telegraph, who claim that Liverpool 'are confident they can lure Clyne to Merseyside' despite a lack of Champions League action...presumably because he has apparently fallen off Manchester United's radar. Why just £10m? Because he is out of contract next summer.
The Telegraph are also describing a bid for Christian Benteke as 'imminent' while repeating the oft-repeated line that James Milner and Danny Ings will join the club on free transfers.
One player they do not mention is Nicolas Gaitan, who - according to the Daily Mail at least - will cost £21m from Benfica. Which is still less than they paid for Adam Lallana.
KLOPP TO KOP?
'JURGEN KLOPP has made himself available to be next Liverpool manager,' say The Sun. Well, Jurgen Klopp has indicated that he does not want a sabbatical and The Sun have interpreted this as making himself available for the Liverpool job.
He said: "I am not tired. I haven't had any contact with any other clubs but I am not planning a sabbatical."
Should Liverpool still back Brendan Rodgers if Klopp is available? Hell no.
